48 hours in Debrecen: the perfect weekend, step by step

Only have a weekend in Debrecen? That's plenty of time to get to know the best of the city of the civis burghers. We've put together a relaxed yet rewarding 48-hour itinerary, from morning to evening, on foot and by tram, starting from our apartments.

Day 1, morning: the city centre

Start the day with a good coffee on Piac utca, then walk over to the Nagytemplom (Great Reformed Church). Climb the tower for the panorama, then take in Kossuth tér and the pedestrian street between the Kistemplom (Small Church) and the Nagytemplom. For lunch, settle into one of the bistros in the city centre.

Day 1, afternoon: culture

In the afternoon, head to the Déri Museum and Munkácsy's Christ Trilogy, followed by a stroll past the Csokonai Theatre and the grand buildings of the city centre. For the evening, book a table at a cosy restaurant around Simonffy utca.

Day 2, morning: the Nagyerdő

The Nagyerdő (Great Forest park) is just a few minutes away by tram. Wander along the park's paths to the Békás pond and the Water Tower, see the university's impressive main building, then unwind in the thermal or leisure pools of the Aquaticum.

Day 2, afternoon: rest and the journey home

After lunch, visit the Botanical Garden, or simply relax on a café terrace. If you have time left, take home a pair of Debrecen sausages from the Market Hall: the perfect souvenir.

Tip: buy a day ticket for the tram. It's the quickest and most enjoyable way to travel between the city centre and the Nagyerdő.

That's how much fits into 48 hours, and by the end you're guaranteed to want to come back. Our apartments are the perfect base for this weekend.
